I loved my walker. My legs were too week to hold me up yet, but my love for danger and adventure was already strong. My wheels were quick and smooth on the hard wood, my socks slid on the polished surface as my walker gained momentum. BAM! I bounced off the cupbord below the sink. I smiled mischeviously as I went back for more. SMASH! CRASH! I saw the stairs, wooden bars restraing me from adventure and exploration. "What is down there?" In my mind were forests and waterfalls, mythical beasts, caves and secret passages. "Bars can't stop me!" My hands started fumbling all over the wood, pushing, pulling, hitting. A button! The restraint came loose and fell. "I'd better get a running start." I backed up all the way against the refrigerator then started pushing myself toward the stairs. My feet still slipped as I went faster and faster, the opening got bigger in my vision. A crashing sound echoed through each room of the house, a childs screaching voice... laughter. I would have done it again if I could get up off my side and back to the top.
True story. Only the facts have been changed. That was my earliest memory. Mostly I just see glimpses of images, and remember feelings and emotions. I remember the world being all sideways at the bottom of the stairs. Pretty sure I scared the piss out of mom though.
